The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB), also known as the One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB), is a bariatric surgery procedure that is known to deliver excellent results in terms of weight loss. It is an easier and quicker surgical procedure than the traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The mini gastric bypass involves dividing the stomach laparoscopically and then connecting the initial part to the small intestine thus “bypassing” the passage of food through the rest of the stomach. With the reduced stomach size, you need to eat less food, and that results in weight loss.
The mini gastric bypass surgery is a restrictive bariatric surgery, which means that it reduces the amount of food your stomach can take in by surgically reducing the size of your stomach via the “bypass” created from a section of the stomach to the small intestine. It is also a malabsorptive bariatric surgery, which means that it limits food absorption by the small intestine by bypassing a section of it. Because of reduced food intake and reduced food absorption, you lose weight over time.
Studies have shown that the mini gastric bypass can cause the reversal of Type 2 diabetes in a significant percentage of morbidly obese patients. The Mini Gastric Bypass is often viewed as an alternative to the Roux en-Y procedure due to its relative simplicity and low complication rate, combined with having shown good results for patients in remission from Type 2 diabetes.
THE PROCEDURE
First developed as a modification of the standard Billroth II procedure, the MGB reshapes the existing stomach into a long narrow tube stomach that sits on the stomach’s right border. A loop of the small gut is then brought up and anastomosed to this stomach tube at a point approximately 1.80 to 2 meters from the start of the intestine; the entirety of the intestine is around 20 meters.
Who is a good candidate for a mini gastric bypass?
The procedure has shown excellent results for patients with Type 2 Diabetes, with evidence indicating it can even prompt remission. Overall, the mini gastric bypass surgery is suitable for overweight and obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above.
How much weight can be lost with a mini gastric bypass?
Most patients tend to lose between 50 to 80 per cent of their excess weight within the first 12 months after undergoing the surgery.

I want to thank you for the great effort and expertise that you put in the hair transplant procedure which you did on me. You have fixed a big cut from a previous, very bad hair transplant in Jordan. It kept me very nervous and uncomfortable for very long time. Now, after conducting this surgery by you, I feel very very happy because the cut is almost gone. I like your personality and professionalism. I am really glad that I made a decision to come to Dubai and conduct the surgery at Cocoona Clinic Thank you very much.
