As we age, our skin becomes more lax, wrinkles and crow’s feet appear and we lose both volume and tone to the face. But getting older doesn’t have to be a downhill battle. There are many minimally-intrusive procedures that can help to restore our youthful good looks with minimal discomfort, no downtime and immediate results. Fillers and anti-ageing injections are two such examples which are increasingly being adopted by men and women who are not happy to let nature take its course, as they want to look as good as possible for as long as possible.
Injectable fillers can be used to fill in the deep folds that appear as we get older, such as the nasolabial folds (also called “bracket lines” that run from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth). Applied with skill and an artistic eye, fillers can also be used to excellent effect in order to create fuller lips, and to pad out hollows in the cheeks and under the eyes. While collagen was once used the main ingredient for fillers, this has now been replaced by brands such as Restylane, the primary component of which is hyaluronic acid.
Will I feel any pain while having fillers?
Some discomfort may be experienced when the fillers are injected, which can be made manageable with the application of topical anaesthetic cream to the injection site or sites prior to the treatment commencing. The level of discomfort will vary from patient to patient depending on their individual pain threshold and the location of the area or areas where the injection will take place; for example, some areas are more sensitive than others, such as the lip area and under the eyes. Your consultant will be able to advise on what to expect during the treatment in accordance with your individual situation, goals and treatment plan.

As anti-ageing injections require no downtime, recovery is immediate and the results can be seen within days, it’s no surprise that the treatment is increasingly popular. The use of anti-aging injectables is now widespread and, in some circles, viewed as a modern beauty ‘essential’.
The popular anti-ageing injections work on the following principle – when injected they relax the muscles, preventing the skin from creasing and forming wrinkles. They are especially effective for relaxing and reducing the appearance of the frown lines between the eyebrows and the anxiety or worry lines that tend to appear on the forehead. They can also be used to minimise the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes and lines around the neck, also known as ‘turkey neck’.
While anti-aging injections are now readily available, it should be noted that they should only be used in the hands of experienced and qualified medical practitioners. The best results can be achieved due to the skill of the practitioner, ideally one with advanced knowledge of how the facial muscles work to get the desired look. In inexperienced or unqualified hands, there is the risk of unpleasant side effects, such as drooping to one side of the face, temporary paralysis and worse.
Will I feel any pain during anti-ageing injections?
Any discomfort is temporary, limited to the injection site and most find that it last for only a few seconds. Patients can have topical anesthetic cream applied before the procedure to numb the area or areas to be treated.
How long do the results last?
The results can usually be seen for three to four months, but with ongoing treatment the results often last for longer.
