What is Rhinoplasty or Nose Job?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical process to enhance the function of the nose or to improve its shape and size. Usually it is an out-patient process, wherein the patient is not kept overnight, and can go back home after the procedure.

Why Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery usually is done for the following reasons:

  • Aesthetic reasons:
    • Correct the nose size vis-à-vis face size – reduce/ resize\
    • Straighten a crooked nose
    • Widen or narrow the nose width to correct proportion
    • Remove the bumps along the nose bridge
    • Restructure nose tips
  • Medical reasons:
    • Cure breathing issues (also called septoplasty)
    • Treat nose damage from accidents (referred to as reconstructive rhinoplasty)
Deciding about Rhinoplasty

If you are considering rhinoplasty, a bit of soul-searching is in order before you conclude whether you should proceed with it. You should be clear about the “Why” & the “Who” – why you want it and with whom you should do it.

Reasons and expectations from rhinoplasty
Think about why you want to undergo the nose surgery? Are you able to clearly identify what is wrong with your nose and which aspects you want changed? Or are you still confused? Are you ready to face the world with a new nose and what is your tolerance for minor flaws? If you are considering it to please someone else, or for better job prospects, you should avoid doing it. If you are unsure of what exactly is wrong, it may also be unwise to proceed. While rhinoplasty today can give outstanding results, and high satisfaction, over 10% of rhinoplasties world-wide go for a revision/ correction. So, make sure your expectations from rhinoplasty are reasonable and you have a positive approach.Choosing your rhinoplasty surgeon
Choice of your rhinoplasty surgeon is a decision to be made with utmost care and due thought.
The bare minimum requirement in choosing your rhinoplasty doctor should be his/ her specific expertise and experience in rhinoplasty, and proven track record of good results. Choose a surgeon who does this operation with passion and is striving for perfection, and provides ‘natural’ looking noses. Your surgeon should listen to your requests and understand your point of view and be able to analyze the flaws in a clear and concise manner. If your surgeon does not have a customized plan for you, he’s not right for you.
Collect information from various sources before you decide on your rhinoplasty doctor.
The effectiveness of your surgery is dependent to a large extent on your rhinoplasty surgeon.

Who is a good Rhinoplasty candidate?

Good candidates are primarily adults, whose facial growth has been achieved. If this procedure is done on younger, growing people, the future growth may change or affect the surgical appearance attained from the early procedure.

People with overall good health, positive outlook and realistic goals make good patients for this Nose surgery.

Being a non-smoker helps too.

Rhinoplasty procedure explained

Rhinoplasty is done as an outpatient procedure under general or local anesthesia, depending on individual circumstances. In either case, you will not feel any pain during the procedure.

During the procedure, the doctor will make incisions in the nostrils. This will enable the doctor to access the bone and cartilage inside the nose so it can be reshaped. Any other medical issues such as deviated septum will also be corrected at the same time.

Once the reshaping process is complete, the skin will be put back in place and the incisions sealed.

You will have nasal splints and gauzes for a week after surgery and swelling and bruising for up to 2 weeks, which will then start to diminish, but would be slightly visible for few months post-surgery.

Most of the change to your nose shape will be evident within 2-12 weeks from surgery, but gradual changes will continue for up to a year, whereupon your new nose shape will become fully established.

Corrective or Revision Rhinoplasty

A secondary, corrective or revision rhinoplasty is done to rectify the shape and/or function of the nose, that was either not fixed in an earlier rhinoplasty, or has been made worse by that surgery.

Over 10% of Rhinoplasties go for a revision so this should be taken into account. Consider and clarify the cost implications for a revision, getting it right the first time is the best, so please choose your surgeon carefully.

Dr. Sanjay at Cocoona, Dubai is also a revision rhinoplasty specialist. Book a consultation if you aren’t satisfied with your previous rhinoplasty results.

Rhinoplasty recovery period/ downtime

Rhinoplasty has a surprisingly short recovery period – typically a week only until the splints and bandages from the surgery are removed.

Your nose will still be swollen at that time, and you might have swelling around your cheek and eyes too, but by the end of 2 weeks, the bruising and swelling would have dissipated. Use of cold compresses will help keep that under check, along with medication.

You and your surgeon will continue to notice some swelling for a few months after surgery, but most casual observers would only notice something nice and different about your face.

Most people are able to get back to routine work within 2 weeks after surgery, as the obvious bruising and swelling subsides by then.

However, it may take a few months before you can resume strenuous activity, and your surgeon will guide you about that, and also how to have a speedy recovery.

Rhinoplasty risks and complications

Like all surgeries, rhinoplasty too has some possible risks and complications, and you should be aware of these before you decide to proceed. The best rhinoplasty surgeons will always discuss these in detail and help you understand them explicitly.

The typically associated rhinoplasty risks are:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Temporary swelling and bruising
  • Infections, poor healing, scarring, numbness, breathing difficulties
  • Possibility of repeat corrective surgery

Only after you fully comprehend the potential risks, will the clinic make you sign a consent form for the surgery.

Rhinoplasty – preparing for the big day

After your initial consultation with our rhinoplasty surgeon in Dubai, and once satisfied and clear about the procedure, and the potential risks and complications, you will be required to sign a consent form for your surgery, and a date will be fixed. The next steps will be to coordinate with the support team, who will guide you to be well prepared for the big day.

They will instruct you on various matters like:

  • The medicines that you may be using, for example, you may have to discontinue the use of aspirin at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • Usage of multi vitamins for speedier recovery
  • Other post-surgery medical supplies you may need
  • Usage of medicated soap, prior to the surgery
  • Non-usage of hair conditioners and sprays a day before surgery
  • Diet restrictions before surgery and after

After getting these details sorted out, arrive for the surgery in loose comfortable clothes, without any make up and jewelry.

Now be comfortable, you are in safe hands at the best clinic for rhinoplasty in Dubai.

Rhinoplasty recovery & follow-up – what steps do you have to take

To help the initial healing, the doctor will use gauze bandages, and splints. The initial swelling will subside in a few weeks, and slowly and surely the new shape of your nose will start appearing. Depending on the amount of work done, the shape and structure of your nose might take up to 12 months to finalize. During this time, swelling will come and go, till it settles down.

Our expert rhinoplasty doctors will help you understand all the post-surgery queries that you may have, for example:

  • What medicines will you need after surgery? And for how long?
  • Till when will you need the bandages?
  • When will the stitches be removed, if needed?
  • When can you start regular work, play and exercises?
  • When is your next follow up and how subsequent follow ups will be scheduled?
Rhinoplasty results – what can you expect

Post-surgery, a nasal splint would be required for a week. Some redness and swelling may also be visible which will gradually subside.

The final shape and contours of your nose will get established within 12 months after surgery, during which period gradual changes will take place in the shape of your nose, until the nose shape is firmly established. However, the results of the surgery will start to be evident starting from 2 weeks after surgery once the swelling and bruising diminish, and the details of the new nose come in clear focus.

You might need to have follow-up visits at defined intervals with your surgeon for up to 1 year until the nose takes a final shape.

The natural aging process can alter the shape of the nose in later years, but the results of the surgery are essentially lasting in nature, and the improvement from the original shape will be apparent.

Healthy living, coupled with adequate protection from the sun, will retain the new look for longer.
