Laser technology can gradually remove unwanted tattoos over a series of sessions. Each session lasts between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the tattoo.
During the session, the dermatologist presses a hand-held device to the skin and triggers a laser – the energy from the laser breaks down the ink of the tattoo into tiny fragments which are slowly absorbed into the bloodstream and then pass naturally out of the body.
Who is a good candidate for tattoo removal?
Tattoo removal is suitable for healthy adults. The procedure is most successful on individuals with light skin.
Will I feel any pain during tattoo removal?
Tattoo Removal is not entirely painless but discomfort can be lessened by having numbing cream applied to the area prior to treatment.
How many sessions of tattoo removal would I need before the tattoo is no longer visible?
Depending on the size of the tattoo to be removed and the colours of the ink used, 10 or more sessions may be required. Tattoos created using yellow, green and purple ink will typically need more sessions before they fade than those with black, blue and red ink.
How long do the results of tattoo removal last?
The results of Tattoo Removal are permanent.
How much does tattoo removal cost?
The costs will vary depending on the size of the tattoo, the complexity of the design and the colours used – for example, yellow, green and purple ink need more sessions to fade than black, blue and red ink.
For an accurate cost assessment, you will need to book an initial consultation with one of our experienced dermatologists.
What should I expect before and after tattoo removal?
After each session, the dermatologist will apply topical gel to the area to assist with healing. A bandage or patch is usually applied to the area to protect it. The skin may be red with a raised rash for a short time afterwards and, as treatment sessions progress, the skin may bleed slightly before scabbing over for about a week.
Laser treatment makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so it is important to avoid the area being exposed to the sun for at least a week after each session. As the treatment works best on light skin without a tan, you should continue to avoid the sun and use suncreeen for the duration of the treatment.
Soaps and perfumed products should be avoided on the area for 48 hours after each session. You should also avoid swimming for around a week after each session as this may slow down the healing process.
