Skin lesions are areas on the skin on any part of the body that displays abnormal growth or colouring in comparison to the surrounding skin. Lesions can be defined as:
- Primary Skin Lesions are abnormal skin growths or discolored areas on the skin that may have been present from birth or have developed at a later date, such as birthmarks, blisters, pustules, rashes, weals and similar. Primary Skin Lesions tend to be entirely benign and harmless, although an individual may dislike the appearance of the lesion and may even suffer emotional distress as a result.
- Secondary Skin Lesions are skin abnormalities caused by irritation or damage to a Primary Skin Lesion – this can be either accidental or intentional. These lesions usually feature crusts or scabs, ulcers, scars, scale and skin atrophy. There is a risk of serious infection if left untreated.
How can skin lesions be treated?
Skin lesions can be treated in different ways depending on the type of lesion, how large it is, if infection is present and other factors. Treatment may involve the application of topical creams, oral medications, laser and, in the most severe cases, surgery. Normally, a biopsy will be taken to rule out any potentially dangerous conditions or the presence of malignant cells prior to a bespoke treatment plan being created.
